The Sports Museum is located in the centre of Thessaloniki, on the third floor of the OSE building. The museum was established in 1998 as a result of the combined effort of The Ministry of Culture, the Special Secretariat, the Prefectural Authority of Thessaloniki, and the Municipality of Thessaloniki.

The museum’s mission is to collect, conserve, document and publicize athletics items of historical significance from all over the country. Therefore, the museum has permanent exhibits such as medals, cups, athletes’ garments, gymnastics apparatus, visual material, photographs, promotional material (posters, logos, scarves, flags), artwork (paintings, copperplate engravings, sculptures, postage stamps), some of which are on permanent display while others are displayed in periodic exhibitions which are organized from time to time.

The major exhibitions it has organized are ‘The Art of Chess’ (1998) ‘Greek Olympic Champions’, and ‘100 Years of Olympic Games 1896-1996’ (2000-2001). The exhibition entitled ‘Exhibition of Sailing Sports’ was organized in 2002.Ê The exhibition presents the origins and development of watercraft sports, and has sub-sections on sailing, canoeing and kayaking, and rowing. Among other things the exhibits include excerpts from texts, photographs, paintings, regulations of sports, watercraft and models of watercraft, athletic equipment, cups and medals.
